No comment, I need yours though!

I found this on my email tonight:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

كل عام وانتم بخير

Dear Brothers & Sisters:

The Libyan Association of the Northwest announces its عيد ألاضحى gathering اعاده الله علينا بالخير والصحة والسعادة ... please plan on attending our festivities on Saturday, December 13th, 2008.

Location:

******** ******* ******
***** ******* **

*******, *******

Time: 5:30 to 10:00 P.M.

Brother ******* is sponsoring food & beverage in celebration of his marriage to sister ******* , may Allah bless their union... members of the community may bring حلويات عيد (Eid Sweets) to share with everyone.

Entertainment activity is planned for the children

We would like to take this opportunity to invite all of our Libyan brothers/sisters and their spouses in the Northwest to come & celebrate with us. If you know of someone who has no access to e-mail, please consider this note an invite to them as well.

LANW would like to recognize brother ******** ******* for his efforts through the years in support of community activities. We wish him and family all the best as they take up residence on the east coast – God speed.

Our hope is to have a year full of activities for our community, the more members we have ... the more successful our planned activities will be. Please note that such success can only be attained through our combined efforts … it starts with paying membership dues on Saturday Dec. 13th, 2008. Membership fee is a modest amount that has remained the same for a good number of years while facilities rental fees have steadily increased as well as food cost.
For members who have yet to pay, please bring your checkbook along … this is a worthy cause.

The Steering Committee intends to share budget information with all members on a regular basis … that will include; money collected, expenditures, and account balance.

Kindly respond to this note if you are planning to join us so that we may plan better.

I wanna know if I am over sensitive, or Is there something weird in this email which supposed to be an invitation.

hellp Living Paradox, hope all is well.
lol I laughed reading this invitation, it reminded me of last Eid invitation here in London which I recieved by Email and which for the first time ever it actually asked for money at £15 per family.
Eid parties used to be free but that was because some well off Libyans used to pay the whole bill which was quite a lot actually, now the organisers of these parties are not getting as much help as they used to and they considered canceling them but then decided to carry on but ask people to pay, of course this applies to London's Libyans but I trhink probably the same is happening over there with all the finance problems.
although your party saying it starts with paying all dues maybe should have been a bit more discrete :o)
good luck

How are you LP :), hope things are going well

I wouldnt worry that much about it (if you are thinking its a scam) as they asked for cheques not bank details so go with an open mind and it happens here as well as the bill needs to be shared between the community ...

Fe Aman Allah

Salam Enlightened Spirit,
You know, asking for money for an event is a very sensative subject. I'm not sure there's anyway to do it without just coming out and stating the intentions of the event. For I would want to know in advance what was expected of me before I made a decision, rather than showing up empty handed so to speak and then feel embarrassed over the whole thing.

Hello

Nothing scary about it , we used to do this too, and since the gathering place is rented, and food is bought. we used to have fee per family. and still we had to pay more because it was not enough for food and place.
but we used to have so much fun and the children.

Go & enjoy , wish you a good time

I am aware that Libyans in Portland they meet during Ramadan and during religious holdidays same as in Seattle. I think there is nothing wrong to collect money from members of the community.

Next time if you need help in Seattle, I can ask a very dear friend of mine who has lived there for many years but now he teaches at university in UAE to recommend you Libyans who will be glad to assist you in anything

I don’t think there is any harm in contributing to a fund which would organise events in your local Muslim community, however I would suggest to you to ask other people about the sincerity of this fund and who runs it, and if you feel deep inside you comfortable about it then go ahead and contribute, my Allah guide you and protect you.

Ok dear blogger and readers..I plan not to comment on this but accoording to ur comments, I need to clarify something.

First of all, I need to admit that I am over sensitive.

But believe me dears it is not about paying, but the lack of invitation spirit in this email, or let's say that the invitation spirit was killed by talking about sponsoring, money, and how the organizing committee have done a big favor for the members by keeping the membership fee the same along the years, do they need to mention all this.
All this sounded awkward to me.
I think it would be more polite if they just announce about Al3eed invitation, and they can mention the membership fee in a separate email as our wise friend Anglo-Libyan noted (thanx Allah I am not alone on this), or they can put it as a separate note at the end of the same email, without all this bla bla bla about the fee, how it stayed steady...etc.
Moreover it would be more courteous if they announce the sponsorship of food a nd beverage s at the event when all the guests arrive, and before thy start, some one would declare the sponsoring issue.

So it is not that I am stingy nor that I am afraid ... it's just felt ungracious.

But I repeat it again.. I admit that I am over sensitive as almost all of u dears( Is it right to count dear?) felt okey.
I will try to over come my sensitivity, but if I couldn't I think it is not so hard to live with it ;)

thank you all :)

MusiclLover... u need to comment again on this post!!?

You have a valid point but I think the only way to collect money from Libyans is during that day :-)

Arabs in general do not like blunt and straight forward talk, in this occassion I have to agree with the sender of the email. Do not forget I am sure some members of the community take things for granted and The Libyan Association of the Northwest is not Salvation Army, like they say charity starts at home :-)

You have to decide on your own, if you want to go or not. Try to have a positive opinion of this email. We are humans and we are not perfect, I am sure the sender is reading your blog and next time he will be more considerate :-)

I think this will be shown in a movie theatre which shows only non mainstream, independent or foreign films. It is an excellent article about civil right violations in USA.
